Mendip Miles of enjoyment

Designed to get you up and out into the glorious Mendip area, Sue Gearing’s new book of walks, Mendip Miles, will blow away the winter blues.

The book  was published by Sue on 1st November 2008 and is a compilation of 12 circles to encourage you to experience the variety, interest and beauty of this wonderful area.  They are all within the capacity of most reasonably fit people. They visit ancient hill forts, a 1,750 year old yew tree, standing stones, a long barrow, an old railway line, a former canal,  ancient woodland, Wells cathedral, Ebbor Gorge, welcoming country pubs, farmland, forests and valleys and give you great views.

Mendip Miles is a compilation of 12 of the best walks from her series in the popular monthly magazine, Mendip Times.  They range over the Mendip Hills, North Somerset and the Somerset Levels. One of the walks starts in Chew Magna.

Sue, who lives in Wrington, has been writing walks for publication for well over 20 years in the West Country.  She currently also writes a walk a week in West Country Life, the Saturday supplement of the Western Daily Press.

She has set up a  publishing company to market the walks books and has devised a book formula to appeal to walkers.  The book is A5 in size, 48 pages, full colour with photographs and maps and instructions for each walk.  It is ring bound for ease of use and durability.  Her last book published in 2006, Mendip Minis, was the first of this design and was a sell-out.

She devises the walks on the map and then goes out to follow the route with a recorder and camera accompanied by her husband Peter or friend, plus canine companion Hally.   Then it’s back to write it up, and produce the photographs and map. Sometimes she has to contact the local Rights of Way people to see if they can help with mending a stile or taking down an obstruction on the path.

“This new book of 12 walks is for you to enjoy with your family and friends, and maybe your dog, too,” said Sue. “They could make a good Christmas gift”.
